Denim overalls, from the farm to fashion clothing
As jeans were mine workers’ uniform, overalls were the uniforms of the farmers or working man and they were a symbol of low class… Later, this clothing was like a flag for 1960’s hippies and then for college teens of the 70’s. The most common fabric for this type of clothing is denim but now materials like waterproof or fire resistant are used to sew overalls.
Like so many denim jean styles are always present, overalls are also a fashion garment today, at some cities people wear them for gardening purposes as this a very relaxing clothing, some others wear them because the comfort of not using a belt and having so many pockets!
Women today are wearing overalls and they look so fashion, following the jeans trends, brands are following the same styles: skinny, distressed processes, dungarees, casual, wide leg, flare, high cropped etc..
Now talking about men, overalls are still mostly used for uniform purposes, adding tool and ruler bags, but there are a few styles that some brands have developed for those fashion men that even look for overalls on the kids dept.!!
Grupo Denim, a successful maquiladora from Mexico, has produced overalls and coveralls for brands like Dickies and Wrangler. Salomon Juan Marcos Villarreal, president of this company, has explained that the last year they made unlined and lined bib overalls for Wrangler, and that they even developed a style that had zippers on the out seams. “It was quite a big challenge for our operators as they are used to sew regular overalls but it was so satisfactory to see that they were committed and so open to learn something new, having this great team is what makes us so successful”, said an enthusiastic Salomon Juan Marcos Villarreal.
